The diving beetle Laccornis oblongus (Stephens, 1835) is recorded for the first time from Bavaria, southern Germany, which marks most south-westerly record of species known to date. Three specimens were collected in Murnauer Moos nature reserve Upper Bavaria. We summarize what about habitat Germany and provide photographs sampling site habitus, median lobe aedeagus, paramere species. a checklist 20 other we found syntopic with L. .

Phylogenetic placement of the Pacific Northwest subterranean endemic diving beetle Stygoporus oregonensis Larson & LaBonte (Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae)

Stygoporus oregonensis Larson & LaBonte is a little-known subterranean diving beetle, which, until recently, had not been collected since the type series was taken from a shallow well in western Oregon, USA, in 1984. Here we report the discovery of additional specimens collected from a nearby well in the Willamette Valley. Sequence data from four mitochondrial genes, wingless, and histone III p...

Spectral sensitivity of the principal eyes of sunburst diving beetle, Thermonectus marmoratus (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae), larvae.

The principal eyes of sunburst diving beetle, Thermonectus marmoratus, larvae are among the most unusual eyes in the animal kingdom. They are composed of long tubes connecting bifocal lenses with two retinas: a distal retina situated a few hundred micrometers behind the lens, and a proximal retina that is situated directly beneath. A recent molecular study on first instar larvae suggests that t...

Sexual dimorphism and sexual conflict in the diving beetle Agabus uliginosus (L.) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae)

Sexual conflict can drive intersexual arms races, with female resistance and male persistence traits coevolving antagonistically. Such arms races are well documented in some diving beetles, although how widespread sexual conflict is in this family remains unclear. The European dytiscid Agabus uliginosus has a strikingly dimorphic female; individuals from most regions being smooth and male-like,...
